Dear Commisioner of HMDA/GHMC, We are writing to you to express our deep concern about the worsening condition of the Malaka Cheruvu & the Khajaguda Cheruvu (next to Engineering Staff College of India), both located on the old Bombay road, Gachibowli. These lakes have been a transit point for many migratory & territorial birds and also a source for ground water replenishment. The lakes also have great varieties of fishes like Carps and Snakeheads, and sometime ago Khajaguda lake was leased to some fisherman. The lakes have beautiful rock formations on its banks and the Malakaka Cheruvu’s back drop are old tombs. In the last 5-6 years, there are six to seven apartments and few mammoth constructions very close to the Malaka Cheruvu. As per the GHMC plan we also notice that an 80 ft road is being planned just next to this lake to connect the old Bombay road to DPS school road. Most disturbing is the blasted rock debris from all the construction sites which are dumped on the banks of these lakes. This has lead to irreversible shrinkage and potential encroachment of the lake. The Malaka cheruvu has already been encroached (contented though by the residents) by a petrol bunk and two residential plots. The lake in the recent times has also seen increase in the amount of plastic and black sludge. These two lakes are a true centre of biological mega diversity, which is of exceptional value to humanity and must be protected for the present and future generations. In addition to its biological significance, these lakes have a central economical and cultural value to the population of the Gachibolwi, khazaguda, nanakramguda, Manikonda and Nallagandla and other nearby areas. With support from government and the local community these lakes can directly benefit from the notion of the lake area being declared as “ecologically-clean” region. Sir, we ask you to help the conservation of the Malaka and Khazaguda lakes by initiating time bound steps for a) Marking the area of the lakes by a fence with all the legal & statutory notices, b) Planting of trees on the perimeter of the lakes. c) Starting small paddle rowing & bird watching employment schemes as a part of the tourism developed schemes for the local youth which would also benefit the residents of this area. d) With help from government we can help with setting up the rowing station and programs on bird watching to make the lake maintenance sustainable. We trust you will oversee the fulfillment of the protection deserving to the two lakes: Malaka Cheruvu and Khajaguda Cheruvu
